Final Reflections
Please send me your final reflection by Wednesday.
Hi Mary, Where do I begin? After 2 weekends in class I was sure that I would not be on the computer tonight! You are an inspiration. I thought that initially that I would be re-learning blogging and figure out podcasting a bit. You took us in so many tech tool directions and targeted in on what our specific needs were that I left this class not especially excited for podcasting itself but in so many offshoots of podcasting and other "tech" things that my brain is literally spinning. The saying holds true- the more you learn, the more you realize you don't know! Here are the things that stick in my mind and that I want to pursue: Teacher Tube is great. I took the movie and uploaded it to teacher tube and with a little bit of time tonight figured out how to link the movie to the reading blog we created at the school earlier this year. http://rockandrollreaders.edublogs.org/The movie is now in the interesting links section of the reading blog. I want to explore pod bean a bit and make a blog in that because of the video component or do a blog in Iweb which is a work in progress for kbfashion imports. I may end up with a class blog in edublogs because I know it but the blog in iweb looks amazing. Liked what you did in audacity today and want to play with garage band but want moreso to explore video podcasting from Imovie as well. (teacher tube has a video on lit circles that I looked at and think it would be neat to have our staff make one around literature circles as it is a commonly used practice at the elementary level at our school) Moving onto skype-great to see how to conference call, send files and lastly see you record our conversations on skype through audacity and then post it to the blog! Next MZorres for video is amazing and to see the passion he has ruminated out was evidenced by those students speaking in the video. "Teachers are teaching through antiquated instruction and we as students don't even think like that anymore" is something we all need to embrace as we begin to work differently in the year 2007. The blogs that the teachers created in Shrewsbury were outstanding and the one around the community brings further ideas about social studies instruction regarding the winchester community standards in the format of blogs. Not so interested in audio blogs but seeing those could help me to possibly rethink it. Will share the states blog with 4th grade teachers. Lastly the rss feeds -I get- but need another session on just that. Am enjoying my igoogle page and think what Plymouth schools is doing around newsletters is what all districts should be doing. Need to bring that up with the tech department as it could be a huge forum for parents and teachers to see what is going on at other schools -everyone subscibing to the feeds of all schools. I only know what is going on at my school but would like to see what is drumming at the other schools as well. The tablet is something we are looking at right now and I don't have proficiency with this tool but we did download jumping minds on the tablet we bought for the school and are also exploring the clickers-2 great tech tidbits!!! Need to move from the smartboard to the tablet perhaps but this class made me want to get the recording to the notebook down as the math movies made by your math teachers were great as well. I really enjoyed meeting everyone at the class and hope we keep in touch. Feel free to skype:kerryb30 Thanks to everyone for making this a positive tech experience. Thank-you so much for getting me re-excited about technology and moving me into Web 2.0. Today I am going to learn to use GarageBand. Hopefully I will create a podcast and put pictures into it as well. That's my goal for today.
I am using a borrowed computer, and while I am online, Skype is telling me that I am not online. I'll try to get that straightened out, but want to do GarageBand first. I'll post a link to my podcast when it is done.
I was a little sleepy this morning and typed in the wrong url to get to this blog. I typed in Podcast for Educators (the name of this course). Guess what! There is a blog with that name! I was disconcerted at first -- wondering why Mary posted a hot sauce coupon -- but there are some good links on it and some "how to" podcasts.
Have a nice day everyone!

Podcasting in the Classroom Reflections Carol Bradford
I have really appreciated this opportunity to update myself to Web 2.0. I have had exposure to many new technologies such as Skype, Smartools for Smartboard, tablets, blogs, podcasts, and video podcasts. All of these things have inspired me and have sent my mind into a whirlwind of ideas of what I would like to do to make my teaching come alive and up-to-date.
Sylvia was very kind to spend time with our class on Friday. Her mathcast was exactly what I needed to see. I spent some time today researching the rumor mill online, and did find Apple gossip on several blogs that confirmed that Apple its planning to market its own tablet style laptop. After seeing what Sylvia was able to do to create her mathcast, I am very interested in getting a tablet myself. At least I have been motivated to start using our school’s smartboard in my math classes.
I decided to try to create my own video podcast after seeing Sylvia’s. I was frustrated to find that the version of Garageband that is on my borrowed laptop is an older version that does not support this. Since I really wanted to give this a try, I used iMovie to create a very rough first try. I created still images that I imported into iMovie and I recorded my own voice narrating my very own “mathcast.” I also created an OurMedia login and will be uploading my mathcast to OurMedia.
My next step will be to purchase and install iLife soon. I so enjoyed Leslie’s demonstration and realize that iWeb and GarageBand are just what I need to publish podcasts better than the one that I just tried with iMovie. Saving to my .mac account should be seamless. I am also looking forward to using iWeb to create a static internet presence (for school purposes – things that don’t change) and linking it to a classroom blog. In the classroom blog, I will post notes on the Connected Math lessons that I have taught each day. Sometimes I will include podcasts to make these notes more clear. This should be a help to students and parents when they are struggling with the homework assignments, and will be a good record for me of what I have covered. I will also use the blog to post a question occasionally. For homework, I will ask my students to answer on the blog.
I also teach one geography class, and I hope to find some podcasts that have been authored by people who are from the countries that we study. I have already found a blog whose contributors are teenagers who live in Kenya, and I imagine that there are many more like this. I will also use the math rap on TeacherTube as an example of the rap I am going to assign for my students.
Finally, I realize how I have under-utilized all of the features that are in my .mac account. I plan to read all of the tutorials and use it for my website, blog, and podcasts. It is so much more than an e-mail address.
This course was the most intense fast paced course that I've ever taken and I feel that I need to take it again in order to register all of the information. I am most appreciative of Mary who consistently and tirelessly answered our harem scarem questions in a whirlwind fashion. She must be exhausted but also excited to know that her students were so energized by her content matter. I feel like the students in Marc Torres' video would totally love Mary. She's 21st century all the way.
I definitely need a refresher on many of the skills we learned so that I can correctly implement them, however I am excited to have been introduced to ALL of those tips.
I think that once teacher tube gets more developed that maybe I can even upload some videos so that other Italian teachers can use the videos. However, I found really great ones on youtube such as a pizza throwing video and the national anthem, both of which I uploaded on my Italian class blog. They are also being stored on podbean.
I have 3 podcasts from itunes as well and at some point will actually subscribe to pay for the better casts out there. In the meantime I have RSS's Italianpodcast.com into my igoogle page and therefore, I will have that at the ready. The RSS feeds from various Italian newspapers will make my igoogle page look flash but will also actually HELP me in the classroom. I now don't have to constantly go to those web sites. They will come to me. Now that is man making the machine work for me.
I have yet to get the object insert or audacity to work. I have it installed but who knows if I did it correctly, as I can't get the voice to record. Uffa! I do intend to get it to work because I want to do away with the "behind the chalboard tape recording sessions". Ha ha.
Although I'm excited about the tablets and ilife, my biggest goal is implementing authentic Italian voices and videos into the classroom so I can spice up the class with less time dedicated to whole class video time. I will pique their interest more with lessons peppered with mini podcasts and videos. I will definitely work on mini projects over the summer to include podcasts on dialects, Hollywood gossip in Italian and weather forecasts. It'll be fun.
What a great group of students! I am so impressed with your collaboration and ability to see the big picture. You now have a current vision of where 21st century teaching is moving. PLEASE share with teachers in your building. Show them Digital Students @Analog Schools.
It was great meeting all of you. Maybe a part two next year!

Glad to see people posting this morning. Suzanne is still chatting with Jeff who published in Teaching and Learning this month. Very cool.
Carol and I skyped this am and sure enough my webcam worked. She saw me working in my PJ's this morning.
Hope everyone has a chance to digest and explore all the information we have covered this weekend.
